PARTICIPANTS GEARING UP FOR BICTA 2015

THE Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2015 Working Committee organised another workshop to equip participants with effective presentation skills and selection of contents as part of their preparation to compete and present project entries in August 2015.

According to a press release, this is the second of the three workshops organised for the BICTA 2015 participants. The workshop was held at Seri Kerna Hall, AITI Office, and was attended by more than 60 participants from the ICT industry, secondary schools, higher learning institutions and private colleges.

Throughout the workshop, participants were engaged in ice-breaking sessions and group brainstorming exercises, impromptu speech practices as well as on-stage presentations. Topics covered include introduction to impactful presentation, presenting with confidence, using PowerPoint powerfully and delivering impact.

The presentation skills workshop was facilitated by Soon Loo, a renowned Bruneian speaker, entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He is the Managing Director of Seri Venture Capitalist, with a rich corporate experience spanning from startups in the Silicon Valley where he managed to raise more than US$35 million in venture capital funds to multinational corporations in China and Singapore.

Soon Loo is a Harvard MBA graduate and has received the prestigious 'Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World' award by the Junior Chamber International. Soon Loo is an international coach (mentor) certified by the International Coach Federation since 2006.

BICTA is an annual ICT competition led by the Ministry of Communications and jointly organised by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI). There are three categories in the competition, namely School Project, Tertiary Project and ICT Industry.

Each first place winner for the above categories will receive cash prizes of $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 respectively.

There will also be four Special Awards this year, namely 'Promising Entrepreneur', 'Young Developer', 'Green ICT' and 'Emerging Technology'.

BUSINESS WORKSHOP FOR BICTA 2015 PARTICIPANTS

The Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2015 Working Committee organised a two-day Business Plan workshop aimed to provide some insights for the BICTA participants into business strategy planning, validating market or commercial potential as well as forecasting their financial needs for their proposals. The workshop was attended by over 100 participants comprising of ICT entrepreneurs as well as students from the secondary schools, higher learning institutions and private colleges.

This is the first of three (3) workshops being organised for BICTA 2015 participants to equip them with the necessary business knowledge and skills prior to final submission of entries which will close on 31 July 2015.

Today's workshop was facilitated by Mr. Andrew Wong, founder and CEO of MAD Incubator, Malaysia's leading and largest private incubator, as well as Pg Sarimah binti Pg Hj Abd Latif of Suhbe Co.

Amongst the topics covered were Customer Targeting & Value Proposition, Innovation Strategy, Creating a Compelling Business Model, Sales & Marketing Strategy, Cash Flow, and Business Plan Formulation. The participants were also involved in group brainstorming exercises as well as presentations.

BICTA ROADSHOW FOR PRIVATE COLLEGES

The Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2015 Working Committee organised another roadshow recently at the International Graduate Studies College (IGS) to promote the ICT competition to tertiary students. The roadshow is a part of a series of roadshow organized by the Committee which was held at the IGS College and was attended by more than eighty (80) attendees comprising of undergraduates and graduates as well as lecturers from International Graduate Studies College, Laksamana College of Business and Cosmopolitan College of Commerce & Technology.

In her brief remarks, Dayang Siti Zaraura binti Haji Mohammad, Acting Senior Assistant Chief Executive, Industry Development Group of AITI encouraged the attendees to take up the benefits of participating in the Competition in promoting innovation and technopreneur culture in Brunei. It is then followed by a short introduction to BICTA and APICTA as well as the BICTA 2015 competition by the BICTA Secretariat - Dayang Farihah binti Haji Md Said, Manager and Dayang Johana binti Sumin, Technical Assistant, both from the Industry Development Group of AITI.

BICTA is an annual ICT competition led by the Ministry of Communications and jointly organised by Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and InfoComm Federation Brunei (IFB). It aims to stimulate innovation and creativity in the ICT industry amongst individuals, organisations and SMEs. BICTA is a component of an international competition, the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards where the quality and categories provided are in-line with APICTA standards.

There are three (3) categories in the BICTA competition, namely School Project, Tertiary Project and ICT Industry. Each first place winner for the above categories will receive cash prizes of BND2,500.00, BND5,000.00 and BND10,000.00 respectively. There will also be four (4) Special Awards this year: Promising Entrepreneur, Young Developer, Green ICT, and Emerging Technology.

To participate in BICTA competition, interested students of the tertiary level or undergraduates can participate as Tertiary Project category. The students must be registered in their respective local higher learning institutions, such as universities and private colleges in Brunei Darussalam. Graduates in the tertiary level may be eligible to participate within one (1) year of graduation with the school's consent. Students can participate as an individual or in a group, and to be accompanied by a tutor or supervisor to guide their progress throughout the competition especially at APICTA.

Winners from BICTA 2015 will be nominated to enter APICTA in Sri Lanka this year. AITI also offers grants to further enhance the winning entry in APICTA with an amount of BND50,000.00 for winner of any category and BND25,000.00 for any merit award.

The session concluded with a talk on the standards of ICT projects at the APICTA level by Pengiran Sarimah binti Pengiran Haji Abd Latiff, the Mentorship Coordinator of BICTA 2015 and a Q&A session. She also enlightened the audience with examples of past winning projects in APICTA. Several videos on previous BICTA and APICTA winners from Brunei Darussalam who shared their journey and experiences in developing their winning products were also showcased during the roadshow.

Walk-in clinics or consultations were also opened during this roadshow. Interested students took the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their ideas on a one-to-one session. Quite a number of students approached with some good concepts that can be further improved throughout the participants' workshops and mentoring sessions provided by BICTA 2015 prior to the final submission at the end of August 2015.

AITI would like to encourage all schools including primary, secondary and tertiary levels, as well as local individuals and ICT companies who have their own ICT products and services to participate in BICTA 2015. The deadline for entry submissions (proposals) is now extended to 14th May 2015 which will then lead to the final submissions for the actual product or prototype on 31st July 2015.

THE 2015 Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) was launched yesterday with its three categories of school project, tertiary project and ICT industry now welcoming entry submissions.

'Innovation to Generate a Smart Nation' will be this year's theme, revealed Hj Jailani Hj Buntar Acting Chief Executive of the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and Chairman of BICTA 2015's working committee yesterday.

"BICTA 2015 will emphasise the creation of innovative research and development in the ICT-related fields towards realising the generation of smart nation," he said.

Hj Jailani also said BICTA is anticipating an increase in the number of entries this year, as the country looks for more winning products to compete in the 2015 Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) which will take place in Sri Lanka later in November.

To encourage more participation, BICTA's working committee has lined up a series of marketing activities including road shows to schools, colleges and the ICT industry.

Under the ICT industry category, open to individuals, groups, or locally registered ICT businesses, there are 13 areas for entry; communications applications, financial applications, industrial applications, security applications, research and development, E-Government and services, E-Health, E-inclusions and E-Community, E-Learning, E-Logistics and supply chain management, start-up company, tools and infrastructure and tourism and hospitality.

The School Project category is for primary and secondary students, while the Tertiary Project caters to undergraduate students from higher education institutions.

A cash prize of 10,000, 7,000 and 3,000 will be awarded to first place winners in the ICT industry, Tertiary project and Student project categories respectively.

Four special awards; Promising Entrepreneur, Green ICT, Young Developer and Emerging Technology, will also be handed out.

Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Communications and Chairman of AITI Abdul Mutalib Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yusof was present as guest of honour at yesterday's launch.

The deadline for entry submission is May 1, while the BICTA award ceremony is scheduled for August 15. More details on participation and application forms can be found on BICTA's website at www.bicta.gov.bn.
